‘The Amityville Horror’ Getting Remake From Director David F. Sandberg

David F. Sandberg (Shazam!, Shazam: Fury of the Gods, Annabelle: Creation, Lights Out) has signed on to helm Amazon MGM Studios’ next The Amityville Horror movie.

Sandberg will co-produce with Peter Safran and John Rickard of The Safran Company, while Lotta Losten and Natalia Safran of The Safran Company will serve as executive producers.

The screenplay for the reworking of the original 1979 hit was written by Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing. Based on Jay Anson’s 1977 novel of the same name, the movie, which starred Josh Brolin, Margot Kidder, and Rod Steiger, portrayed a young couple who buy a haunted house. The Conjuring: Last Rites, which was released last weekend and is expected to gross over $200 million at the box office worldwide, was also written by the same writing team.

There was a 2005 remake starring Ryan Reynolds, Melissa George, and Philip Baker, in which Chloe Grace Moretz made her film debut. That version of the movie brought in $65.2 million at the box office, whereas the 1979 version brought in $86.4 million. There have numerous films in the franchise, including Amityville II: The Possession, Amityville 3-D, and Amityville: The Awakening.
