The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Nate Bargatze at the Peacock Theater on Sunday, September 14, 2025, proved to be one of the most unpredictable ceremonies in recent memory. What was expected to be a sweep for Severance, which led the field with 27 nominations, instead became a night defined by surprise wins, history-making performances, and emotional firsts.
The biggest shock of the evening came when The Pitt, a new medical drama, triumphed over Severance, The Last of Us, and The White Lotus to win Outstanding Drama Series. Noah Wyle, who has spent years as one of television’s most respected actors without a win, finally earned his first Emmy for his lead role in The Pitt. Katherine LaNasa’s supporting actress win for the same series cemented its breakout success.
In comedy, Apple TV+’s The Studio became the undisputed heavyweight, dominating the category and breaking records in the process. The series won 13 Emmys, the most ever awarded to a comedy in a single year, overtaking the previous high mark shared by The Bear. Seth Rogen, who co-created and stars in the series, walked away with Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, while the show also won for writing, directing, and ultimately took home the crown for Outstanding Comedy Series.
The limited and anthology categories delivered their own share of memorable victories. Adolescence, a British Netflix drama, claimed Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and swept the field with wins for Stephen Graham as Lead Actor, Erin Doherty as Supporting Actress, and Owen Cooper, the 15-year-old newcomer who became the youngest male actor ever to win an Emmy, for Supporting Actor. Philip Barantini also took home the directing prize, while the show’s writing team of Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham earned recognition for their work. Cristin Milioti won her first Emmy in the lead actress category for her role in The Penguin, marking another career milestone.
Several moments during the night resonated beyond the awards themselves. Tramell Tillman’s victory for Severance made him the first Black actor to win Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Hannah Einbinder, in her acceptance speech for her Supporting Actress win in Hacks, ended with a political statement that quickly became a talking point online. Meanwhile, Bargatze kept the evening light by jokingly penalizing winners for speeches that went too long, with fines humorously directed toward charitable donations.
Beyond the headline categories, The Traitors was named Outstanding Reality Competition Program, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert triumphed once again in the talk series category, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver continued its dominance in scripted variety. In the live variety special race, SNL50: The Anniversary Special walked away with the Emmy. On the creative side, directing honors went to Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg for comedy (The Studio), Adam Randall for drama (Slow Horses), and Philip Barantini for limited series (Adolescence). Writing awards were distributed to the teams behind The Studio, Andor, and Adolescence, reflecting the diverse storytelling honored this year.
