A musical film based on Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” will be starring and produced by superstar Sabrina Carpenter for Universal Pictures.
The film will be written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, who is most recognized for her work on the crime film Hustlers, which starred Jennifer Lopez.
The project will be produced by Marc Platt, the musical-loving producer behind Wicked’s Broadway and film adaptations. Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton of Alloy Entertainment, the company behind Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars, will also be producing.
Although the nature of Carpenter’s project is unknown, some claim it is a passion project for the international pop sensation. According to reports, Carpenter brought a lookbook and particular concepts to the studio almost a year ago. Producers and later Scafaria were brought to the tea party as the idea developed.
The project is being managed for the studio by director of production development Jacqueline Garell and senior vice president of production development Ryan Jones. The project is being overseen by Katie McNicol for Marc Platt Productions.
Carpenter just received six nominations for the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, including song of the year, record of the year, best pop solo performance, and best music video for “Manchild,” as well as album of the year and best pop vocal album for “Man’s Best Friend.” Her acting credits include the 2010s television series Girl Meets World and the films Emergency and The Hate U Give.
