“Game of Thrones” Prequel Canceled; Another Announced

Earlier today it was announced that the Game of Thrones prequel pilot starring Naomi Watts was not being picked up by HBO. The series, called The Long Night, would have been set thousands of years before the original series, and would focus on the origin of the White walkers, as well as the ancestors of House Stark.

In addition to Watts, it would have starred  Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), Josh Whitehouse (Northern Soul), Denise Gough (People, Places and Things), Jamie Campbell Bower (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones), Sheila Atim (Girl From the North Country), Ivanno Jeremiah (Doctor Who), Georgie Henley (The Spanish Princess), Alex Sharp (How To Talk To Girls At Parties) and Toby Regbo (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald).

Since that new broke, HBO has confirmed another prequel series titled House of Dragon, has been greenlit. The series will focus on the Targaryen civil war, and has officially received a full series order for 10 episodes. Emmy-winning Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik will serve as co-showrunner and direct the pilot. The new series was co-created by author George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal (Colony), who will also be a showrunner on the series.
