“Star Wars” Spinoffs On Hold After “Solo” Disappointment

According to Collider,  Lucasfilm is pumping the brakes on any proposed Star Wars spinoffs, including the rumored Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kanobi films, thanks to the lackluster performance and reception of Solo: A Star Wars Story. Solo brought in $84.4 million in its opening weekend and  grossed $192.8 million domestically and $339.5 million worldwide in its first month, and while those numbers are far from terrible, they under what the studio had projected. Not helping were the mixed reviews (it currently holds and relatively respectable 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, but only a 64% with audiences, which is what matters more).

Brian Johnson’s upcoming new trilogy is still on the docket, but for now the studio is just going to concentrate on Episode IX. What is upsetting about this news is that a film that no one wanted to see get made (Solo) is now responsible for us not being able to see a film that many of us want to be made (Obi-Wan), including that film’s star (Ewan McGregor). Thanks, Han.
