James Gunn Confirms He Won’t Direct DC Studios’ Live-Action ‘Teen Titans’ Movie

James Gunn has confirmed that he will not be writing or directing DC Studios’ planned live-action Teen Titans movie, putting to rest speculation that the filmmaker might personally oversee the superhero team’s big-screen debut in the new DC Universe.

The DC Studios co-chairman addressed the project during a recent exchange on Threads, where a fan asked several questions about the future of the DCU. Among them was whether Gunn would be writing and directing Teen Titans, to which he responded with a straightforward “No.”

The brief response provides some clarity about Gunn’s involvement in the project, although it leaves several questions unanswered, including who might direct the film and when production could begin.

First announced in March 2024, the live-action Teen Titans movie has been in development with Ana Nogueira attached to write the screenplay. Nogueira also wrote 2026’s Supergirl and has been working on DC Studios’ upcoming Wonder Woman reboot.

Development on Teen Titans has progressed slowly. In 2025, Gunn revealed that Nogueira had shifted her attention to Wonder Woman at his request and that DC Studios had not yet received a completed Teen Titans screenplay. At the time, he acknowledged that the project had taken a back seat to other films in development.

Gunn also addressed speculation surrounding the film’s director earlier this year, dismissing reports that Euphoria creator Sam Levinson was in negotiations to helm the project. In May, Gunn stated that DC Studios was not yet speaking with prospective directors about Teen Titans.

Although rumors have suggested that the film could feature a lineup resembling the popular Cartoon Network animated series, no official roster has been announced. The 2003 series featured Robin, Starfire, Raven, Cyborg and Beast Boy, becoming one of the team’s best-known adaptations.

The Teen Titans originally debuted in DC Comics in 1964, bringing together younger superheroes who had previously appeared as sidekicks to established characters. Over the decades, the team has undergone numerous lineup changes and appeared in several animated productions, as well as the live-action television series Titans, which ran from 2018 to 2023.

While Gunn will not write or direct the film, he remains involved in overseeing the broader DC Universe alongside fellow DC Studios co-chairman Peter Safran.

For now, Teen Titans remains in development without an announced director, cast or release date.
