Great Scott! Universal Pictures is bringing Back to the Future back to theaters for a special one-day engagement on October 21, 2026, giving audiences another opportunity to experience Robert Zemeckis’ 1985 sci-fi classic on the big screen. This time, the film will also be available in 4DX and D-BOX, adding motion-enabled seating and immersive effects to Marty McFly’s time-traveling adventure.
The rerelease coincides with the annual celebration of Back to the Future Day, commemorating October 21, 2015, the date Marty McFly and Doc Brown travel to in Back to the Future Part II. Although the date originates from the 1989 sequel, the upcoming theatrical event will feature the original 1985 film.
The 4DX presentation will allow moviegoers to experience the film with motion-synchronized seats and environmental effects, including wind, water and vibrations. The format offers a different way to experience some of the movie’s memorable sequences, from Marty’s skateboard chase through Hill Valley to the climactic race against time as Doc Brown attempts to harness a lightning strike at the town’s clock tower.
D-BOX screenings will also be available at participating theaters, featuring individually controlled motion seats that move and vibrate in synchronization with the action onscreen. Traditional screenings will be offered for audiences who prefer the original theatrical experience.
Released on July 3, 1985, Back to the Future stars Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly, a California teenager who accidentally travels from 1985 to 1955 in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his eccentric scientist friend, Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown (Christopher Lloyd). Stranded in the past, Marty inadvertently interferes with his parents’ first meeting and must find a way to bring them together before his own existence is erased.
Directed by Robert Zemeckis from a screenplay he co-wrote with Bob Gale, the film also stars Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover and Thomas F. Wilson. Steven Spielberg served as executive producer through Amblin Entertainment.
The original film became the highest-grossing movie of 1985 and earned four Academy Award nominations, winning for Best Sound Effects Editing. Its success led to two sequels, released in 1989 and 1990, as well as an animated television series, video games, comic books and a stage musical.
The upcoming engagement follows Universal’s 40th-anniversary celebration in 2025, which included a theatrical rerelease in premium formats and a limited-edition 4K Ultra HD trilogy collection. That release marked the first time the film was presented in several premium large-screen formats, including 4DX.
With the franchise continuing to attract audiences more than four decades after its debut, the October engagement offers longtime fans another opportunity to revisit Hill Valley while introducing a new generation to Marty and Doc’s original adventure.
Back to the Future returns to theaters nationwide on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, for one day only. Tickets are on sale now, with 4DX, D-BOX and standard screenings available at participating theaters.
