Following the death of Tim Curry at the age of 80, fans are revisiting the actor’s remarkably varied career, from cult musicals and murder mysteries to fantasy adventures, family films and horror.
Curry died at his Los Angeles home on Aug. 25, according to his longtime manager. Over a career spanning more than five decades, the British actor became best known for his performance as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but his filmography extended well beyond the 1975 cult classic. Curry played everything from the devilish Darkness in Legend to Wadsworth in Clue, Cardinal Richelieu in The Three Musketeers and Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island.

Curry’s feature-film debut remains his defining screen role. After originating Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the stage production of The Rocky Horror Show, Curry brought the character to the screen opposite Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick and Richard O’Brien.

Ridley Scott’s dark fantasy gave Curry one of his most visually memorable roles as Darkness, the demonic villain determined to plunge the world into eternal night. Tom Cruise, Mia Sara and David Bennent also star.

Clue (1985)

It (1990)

Although technically a television miniseries rather than a theatrical movie, It belongs alongside Curry’s best-known screen performances. Based on Stephen King’s novel, the two-part adaptation cast Curry as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, the shape-shifting entity terrorizing the children of Derry, Maine.
Curry’s performance became one of the most recognizable portrayals of a Stephen King villain and introduced an entire generation of viewers to Pennywise decades before Bill Skarsgård took over the role for the 2017 theatrical adaptation.
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)

Curry memorably played Mr. Hector, the suspicious concierge at New York’s Plaza Hotel who begins investigating how Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) managed to check into the hotel without his parents.

FernGully: The Last Rainforest (1992)

Curry lent his unmistakable voice to Hexxus, the pollution-loving villain in the animated environmental fantasy FernGully: The Last Rainforest.

The Three Musketeers (1993)

Congo (1995)

The adaptation of Michael Crichton’s novel stars Curry as Herkermer Homolka, who joins an expedition into the African jungle in search of a lost city and valuable diamonds.
Curry later poked fun at his own performance in the movie, telling an interviewer that he felt he deserved the Razzie nomination he received for the role.
Muppet Treasure Island (1996)

The Wild Thornberrys Movie (2002)
