Steven Soderbergh is stepping into Gotham City to help complete production on The Batman Part II while director Matt Reeves remains away from the film due to a family matter.
According to Variety, Soderbergh will oversee the final weeks of principal photography on the Robert Pattinson-led sequel, which recently paused production after Reeves temporarily stepped away. The arrangement is not intended to replace Reeves as the film’s director, with Soderbergh instead working alongside him to complete the remaining footage.
“As Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt’s work, approached Matt and will step in, with the full support of DC Studios, to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part II,” Warner Bros. said in a statement. The studio added that the two filmmakers will work closely with the cast and crew to maintain Reeves’ vision for the sequel.
Soderbergh also made it clear that his role is to help Reeves finish the movie rather than put his own stamp on the project. The Oscar-winning filmmaker praised Reeves’ work on 2022’s The Batman and said the goal is to shoot material that integrates seamlessly with footage already completed. Reeves is expected to resume his involvement during post-production when he is able to return.
Production had been temporarily halted earlier this month after Reeves stepped away for what Warner Bros. and DC Studios described only as a family matter. Star Robert Pattinson subsequently confirmed that filming was taking a brief pause, saying the production would “figure it all out” before moving forward.
Soderbergh brings considerable experience to the unusual assignment. His extensive directing credits include Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Traffic, Erin Brockovich, the Ocean’s trilogy, Contagion, Magic Mike and Logan Lucky. He won the Academy Award for Best Director for Traffic and was also nominated in the same category that year for Erin Brockovich.
The Batman Part II reunites Pattinson with several members of the first film’s cast, including Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb, following Farrell’s starring role in HBO’s The Penguin. New additions include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Charles Dance and Sebastian Koch.
The sequel has taken a lengthy road to production since The Batman arrived in theaters in March 2022. Its release date has been pushed back several times while Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin developed the screenplay, with filming finally getting underway this year. The current production interruption is the latest hurdle for the project, although bringing Soderbergh aboard should allow principal photography to move toward completion while Reeves remains away.
The Batman Part II is currently scheduled to open in theaters on February 18, 2028.
