San Diego Comic-Con 2026 News Roundup

San Diego Comic-Con wrapped up another weekend of movie and television announcements, with Marvel Studios accounting for several of the convention’s notable reveals. The studio returned to Hall H with new details on Avengers: Doomsday, confirmed Ryan Gosling as the MCU’s Ghost Rider and officially announced Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther 3.

Elsewhere at the convention, Johnny Depp appeared in character to debut the first trailer for Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, while Rick Moranis made a rare public appearance alongside the cast of the upcoming Spaceballs sequel.

Here are some notable movie stories to come out of San Diego Comic-Con 2026.

Johnny Depp Debuts ‘Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol’ Trailer

Johnny Depp arrived at Comic-Con in character as Ebenezer Scrooge as Paramount unveiled the first trailer for Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, director Ti West’s new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ familiar holiday story.

Depp first appeared as Scrooge during a promotional activation in San Diego before turning up in Hall H to introduce the trailer during Collider’s Directors on Directing panel. The footage provides the first extended look at Depp’s transformation into the character and West’s take on Scrooge’s encounters with the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come.

The film also stars Rupert Grint as Bob Cratchit, Daisy Ridley as Emily Cratchit, Sam Claflin as Fred and Ian McKellen as Jacob Marley. Andrea Riseborough plays the Ghost of Christmas Past, while Tramell Tillman appears as the Ghost of Christmas Present.

Written by Nathaniel Halpern and directed by West, whose recent films include X, Pearl and MaXXXine, Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol arrives in theaters November 13, 2026.

Deadpool and Peggy Carter Turn Up for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Marvel Studios brought a large portion of the Avengers: Doomsday ensemble to Hall H, but two additional appearances drew attention during the panel.

Hayley Atwell joined the cast onstage, officially confirming that Peggy Carter will return in Doomsday. Atwell has played several versions of Carter across the MCU, most recently appearing as Captain Carter in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the animated What If…?

Ryan Reynolds also made an unexpected appearance in the audience dressed as Deadpool, wearing a gray version of the character’s costume. Reynolds used the appearance to joke with the panel about finding a role for Deadpool in the upcoming film.

Marvel also screened footage exclusively for those in Hall H and assembled a sizable group of Doomsday cast members onstage, including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Simu Liu, James Marsden, David Harbour, Letitia Wright, Lewis Pullman, Kelsey Grammer and Rebecca Romijn.

Anthony and Joe Russo return to direct Avengers: Doomsday, which opens December 18, 2026.

Ryan Gosling Is Marvel’s Ghost Rider

Ryan Gosling is officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ghost Rider.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announced the project during the studio’s Hall H presentation, bringing Gosling and director Shawn Levy onstage to confirm the film. The project reunites Gosling with Levy following their work together on Star Wars: Starfighter.

Jonathan Tropper, who also wrote Starfighter, is writing the screenplay.

Ghost Rider previously reached the big screen with Nicolas Cage playing Johnny Blaze in 2007’s Ghost Rider and its 2011 sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Gabriel Luna later played Robbie Reyes on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The new Ghost Rider is currently scheduled for release sometime in 2028.

Rick Moranis Returns to Comic-Con for ‘Spaceballs: The New One’

Rick Moranis received a standing ovation during a Comic-Con panel for Spaceballs: The New One, the upcoming sequel to Mel Brooks’ 1987 Star Wars parody.

Moranis will reprise his role as Dark Helmet in the film, marking a return to live-action feature acting after spending decades largely away from the screen. During the panel, Moranis joked that he had not retired but had simply been “negotiating,” adding that the sequel came along at the right time.

The panel also included Daphne Zuniga, who returns as Princess Vespa, along with new cast members Josh Gad, Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman. Bill Pullman is returning as Lone Starr, while Brooks will once again appear as Yogurt and President Skroob.

Brooks, who turned 100 earlier this year, appeared during the Comic-Con presentation through a prerecorded message.

Spaceballs: The New One is scheduled to arrive in theaters in April 2027.

Ryan Coogler Announces ‘Black Panther 3’ and a New T’Challa

Ryan Coogler will return to Wakanda for Black Panther 3, and Marvel has now revealed who will take on the name T’Challa.

Coogler joined Marvel’s Hall H presentation alongside Letitia Wright and Winston Duke to officially announce the third Black Panther film. He then introduced Alien: Romulus actor David Jonsson as the franchise’s new Black Panther.

Jonsson will play an adult version of T’Challa and Nakia’s son, Toussaint, who was introduced as a child during the closing scene of 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Nakia revealed that T’Challa had prepared their son for his death and that his Wakandan name was also T’Challa.

Wright and Duke are set to return as Shuri and M’Baku, respectively, with Coogler once again directing after helming the first two films.

Black Panther 3 is scheduled to open December 15, 2028.

With Avengers: Doomsday arriving later this year and Ghost Rider and Black Panther 3 now part of Marvel’s longer-term plans, Comic-Con provided a clearer look at where the MCU is heading beyond its current slate. Meanwhile, Ebenezer and Spaceballs: The New One offered two very different returns for familiar actors and characters.

San Diego Comic-Con is scheduled to return in 2027.
