‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ Sequel in the Works with Jim Carrey And Ron Howard

Universal and Imagine Entertainment have announced that they are developing a sequel to 2000’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Ron Howard is once again directing, and Jim Carrey is in talks to play the iconic Dr. Seuss character the Grinch. Howard and Brian Grazer, his partner at Imagine Entertainment, will co-produce.

Alec Berg (Barry, Silicon Valley, Curb Your Enthusiasm), Jeff Schaffer (Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness; Dave; Curb Your Enthusiasm), and David Mandel (Veep, Curb Your Enthusiasm) will write the screenplay for the untitled follow-up. The three collaborated on Mike Myers’ 2003 Seuss adaptation, The Cat in the Hat.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which was released shortly before Thanksgiving in 2000, made $260 million domestically and $345 million internationally.

Rick Baker and Gail Rowell-Ryan won the Oscar for best makeup. Carrey remembers the procedure as quite challenging, and it took about eight hours a day. He intended to return his $20 million paycheck and quit on the first day of production. With the assistance of a man who taught CIA personnel how to endure torture and since the makeup was eventually cut down to three hours every day, he got through the process.

Inspired by his dissatisfaction with the commercialization of Christmas, Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) published the Grinch story in 1957. It described how the Grinch attempted to destroy Whoville’s Christmas by taking their presents. Boris Karloff voiced both the Grinch and the narrator in the 1966 animated special produced by CBS. In contrast to the black and white of the novel, co-director Chuck Jones decided to render the Grinch green.
