Marvel’s New ‘Zodiac’ Series Sparks Speculation About ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Revival

Marvel Television has announced a new live-action series titled Zodiac, and several clues have fans wondering whether the upcoming Disney+ project could be connected to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which ended its seven-season run in 2020.

The series was announced during Marvel Television’s presentation at New York Comic Con, where Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum described the project as a spy thriller scheduled to premiere in 2028. Few details were revealed about the series beyond its title and logo. Casting is expected to begin in the coming weeks, with production scheduled to get underway in London in spring 2027.

However, Winderbaum suggested that the logo itself contains clues about the show’s direction. “If you’re a fan of the comics there is a lot hidden in that logo,” Winderbaum told attendees.

Fans quickly noticed that the letter “A” in the Zodiac logo appears to incorporate the familiar eagle emblem associated with S.H.I.E.L.D., the fictional espionage organization that has played a prominent role throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Adding to the speculation, actor Clark Gregg, who portrayed Agent Phil Coulson in several Marvel films and all seven seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., shared the Zodiac announcement on his Instagram account. Although Gregg offered no indication that he is involved in the project, his social media activity has prompted fans to question whether Coulson or other characters from the ABC series could return.

What Is Zodiac in Marvel Comics?

The name Zodiac has a history in Marvel Comics, dating back to The Avengers #72 in 1970. Originally introduced as a criminal organization known as the Zodiac Cartel, the group consisted of twelve members whose identities were based on the signs of the zodiac. The organization frequently came into conflict with the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D.

One of its most notable members was Jake Fury, the brother of Nick Fury, who operated under the identity of Scorpio. Later Marvel stories introduced different versions of Zodiac, including a group composed of Life Model Decoys, sophisticated androids capable of impersonating human beings.

Another possible connection comes from Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Warriors comic book series, which introduced the Great Wheel, a secretive organization founded by Leonardo da Vinci and involving members of S.H.I.E.L.D., Hydra and other intelligence organizations. The Great Wheel’s circular insignia also bears a resemblance to the design incorporated into the new show’s logo, suggesting that Marvel may be drawing inspiration from that storyline. These connections have led to speculation that Zodiac could explore the intelligence and espionage side of the MCU rather than focus on the franchise’s traditional superheroes.

Could ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Return?

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered on ABC in 2013 as a television spinoff of the MCU, following Coulson and his team of agents as they investigated unusual threats and confronted organizations such as Hydra. The series starred Gregg alongside Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge and Henry Simmons, among others.

Although the show initially maintained direct connections to Marvel’s theatrical films, its relationship with the larger MCU became increasingly complicated as the series progressed. The show’s final season concluded in August 2020, leaving the surviving characters in different positions within the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization and beyond. A new espionage-focused series could potentially provide an opportunity to revisit those characters, particularly given the comic book connections between Zodiac, Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.

However, Marvel has not announced that Zodiac is a continuation or revival of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., nor has it confirmed the involvement of Gregg, Bennet or any other cast members from the original series.

For now, the connection remains speculation based on the show’s title, comic book history, logo and Gregg’s social media activity. With casting expected to begin shortly and production planned for next year, additional details about Zodiac should become available ahead of its planned 2028 debut on Disney+.
