First Look at ‘Mini War,’ New R-Rated Comedy Reuniting ‘Grandma’s Boy’ Creative Team

A first look at Mini War, the upcoming R-rated comedy starring Luke Wilson, Vanessa Hudgens, Nick Swardson, and Rob Morgan, has been released. The film reunites several members of the creative team behind the 2006 cult comedy Grandma’s Boy, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

Wilson stars as Joe, a laid-back stoner who unexpectedly inherits a miniature golf course from his late uncle. Hoping to sell the business and move on with his life, Joe searches for a buyer willing to preserve his uncle’s legacy. However, his plans are complicated by Darren (Swardson), the owner of a neighboring go-kart track who wants to demolish the golf course and expand his racing operation.

Hudgens plays Olivia, the owner of a roadside hot-dog stand situated between the two businesses. As the disagreement between Joe and Darren escalates, Olivia and the surrounding community become caught up in their increasingly ridiculous rivalry. The film also features Brett Gelman, Kevin Nealon, and Rob Morgan in supporting roles.

Mini War is directed by Joel David Moore, who co-wrote the screenplay with Swardson and Allen Covert. All three previously worked on Grandma’s Boy, with Swardson and Covert co-writing the 2006 comedy alongside Barry Wernick and Moore appearing as the eccentric video game developer J.P.

Released in January 2006, Grandma’s Boy starred Covert as a video game tester who moves in with his grandmother and her elderly roommates after losing his apartment. Although the film received largely negative reviews upon its initial release and struggled at the box office, it subsequently developed a cult following through home video and television. Its popularity helped establish the film as a recognizable entry in the wave of adult-oriented comedies released during the 2000s.

The new film is produced by Moore and Jarod Einsohn through Balcony 9 Productions, alongside Limor Hakim of Level 1 Entertainment. Grandma’s Boy producers Bill Todman Jr. and Edward Milstein are also involved, as are David Wachs and Ojan Missaghi of Toric Films.

The project marks another collaboration among filmmakers associated with Adam Sandler’s comedy circle, particularly Swardson and Covert, who have worked together on several productions over the years. With Mini War, the filmmakers are returning to the kind of irreverent, adult-oriented comedy that helped Grandma’s Boy find its audience two decades ago.

An official release date for Mini War has not yet been announced.
