The off again/on again Pacific Rim 2 is not only moving ahead, but has found its lead. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens’ John Boyega has been cast to star in the Legendary Pictures’ sequel. Boyega will play the son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba’s character in the first film) Original director Guillermo del Toro will be on board to produce, with Daredevil season 1 showrunner Steven DeKnight directing. In addition to starring, Boyega will also serve as a producer. del Toro had this to say to Variety:
“I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multilayered world.”
Pacific Rim 2 was originally supposed to begin shooting last November, but production was delayed. This obviously confirms that it’s full steam ahead, although no new production dates have been announced.
