Golden Globe Winners and Recap

The Golden Globes is considered to be the biggest party of the year in Hollywood. Considerably less stuff than the Academy Awards, it tends to be a fairly more entertaining broadcast. Jimmy Fallon hosted this year, but if you were hoping for the incredible wit of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, or the biting edge of Ricky Gervais, you were sadly disappointed. Fallon, like the rest of the awards, was a big bucket of bland.  Fallon’s opening video, which like years past, included a plethora of A list stars, was barely entertaining,  and his monologue was incredibly safe and unfunny. Even when his teleprompter went down, the man who is a professional comedian could not muster up one funny thing to say.

There were very few highlights from the rest of the broadcast, the biggest being Meryl Streep’s acceptance speech for her Lifetime Achievement award (assuming you voted for the losing side of this past Presidential election). Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig had a fairly funny bit recalling their first times seeing an animated film, each sadder than the last, but that was really about it. A half assed tribute to Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds was about thirty seconds long, and segment in which actors recalled what their first job was came off as patronizing more than anything else.

These are the things we learned from the 2017 Golden Globes:

  • Hugh Laurie’s balding is incredibly undignified.
  • Goldie Hawn is not only as flighty as ever, but has also had a lot of work done.
  • If you don’t have a beard, you’re an asshole.
  • Donald Glover is the coolest guy in Hollywood.
  • Pierce Brosnan is the most debonaire person in Hollywood.
