Amazon Studios has announced that their hit sci-fi series The Expanse will be ending after six seasons. The announcement was made before the upcoming premiere of season five. Based on James S.A. Corey’s best-selling novels, the series originally aired on Syfy, where it was cancelled after three seasons. After a huge Save Our Show campaign, the show was picked up up by Amazon, which helped seal the deal at Amazon, where it became a massive hit.
Executive producers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson released the following statement:
“From the moment we committed to bringing this show to life up until this final season, we have worked tirelessly to honor the vision of the writers. We have prided ourselves on having one of the most diverse casts on television and giving a platform to stories that matter. A special thanks to Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, the writers of both the books and series, and to Naren Shankar, the series showrunner and executive producer. It continues to be an honor and privilege to work with this team. We also would like to thank Amazon for their continuing support to help us tell this story in its fullest and to bring The Expanse to a global audience.”
Each season roughly follows the story from one of the books, and with a thirty-year jump between books six and seven, it makes sense to wrap it up after season six. Original cast member Cas Anvar will not be returning for the sixth season amid numerous sexual misconduct allegations. The first three episodes of season five will drop on December 16, with episodes airing weekly after that.
