After only six months, Quibi, the short-form mobile streaming service, is calling it quits. The service, founded by Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman, failed to find traction, with only a reported 8% of users that signed up for the free trial actually subscribing. Creatively the service had a lot going for it, with series and the Emmy-winning #FreeRayshawn with Laurence Fishburne, Dummy with Anna Kendrick and The Fugitive with Kiefer Sutherland, plus projects from filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, Guillermo del Toro and Antoine Fuqua, but the mobile-only aspect of the service, plus lack of pre-existing, familiar content (and a few legal battles) may have been what did the service in.
They are currently exploring options to see the existing content or the entire service.
