Netflix is attempting to prevent the sharing of accounts by adding a warning to certain accounts. The warning states “Start your own Netflix for free today. If you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching.” The screen then asks “Is this your account? We’ll send you a verification code.” Viewers are then prompted to either the code via email, text or verify later.
According to a LendingTree survey, of 1,500 Netflix users, 72% of respondents stated say they have let someone use their account. In the fourth quarter of 2020, Netflix had 73.94 million U.S. subscribers and they brought in $203.7 million, so losing 72% of potential customers is a decent chunk of change.
