Film Review: Netflix’s  “Power of Grayskull: The Definitive History of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe”

I love watching documentaries that tell you the story behind how films were made, battles were won, or how toys came about. I just love this kind of filmmaking. So, after watching Three Identical Strangers, I needed to watch something a little more lighthearted. I saw that Netflix had released the He-Man documentary, and decide that was what I needed, and boy was I right. My memories of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe were from my oldest son, who was, and still is, an absolute fanatic for all things He-Man and She-Ra related. He has all the toys, I am sure also the comics. I was not a fan of the show or toys, but I recognized how cool it was for a kid. Watching this film, really breaks down the psychology behind, and influences of the toys and eventually the comic and shows.

I loved how the show empowered kids. I remember my kid running around the house with a sword, calling out, “I have the power!” or “I am She-Ra!” That cartoon and those toys brought a lot of joy into his life.

It’s wonderful watching this film, seeing what all went into the creation of the masters of the Universe. All the frustrations and difficulties they had to overcome, the transformation due to cable TV networks like Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and Disney, plus the strict censorship from the FCC, after 1992, Saturday morning cartoons simply went away.

But, there was a time when fun cartoons were a big thing on TV, and this show touches on that nostalgia.

I give Power of Grayskull: The Definitive History of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe a solid 10 out of 10 Potatoes.
