Variety is reporting that Ellen Page is in talks to star is a remake of the 1990 supernatural thriller, Flatliners. The original, directed by Joel Schumacher, starred Keifer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt as medical students who decide to experiment with near death experiences, resulting in being haunted by their sins. The cast was all at the pinnacle of their Hot Young Hollywood years, and while not a spectacular film, it does have its moments, and holds up as a decent thriller. Niels Arden Oplev, the director of the original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, is set to direct the remake from a script by Ben Ripley.
We here at Film Dumpster have been pretty vocal about our dislike of remakes, but if you’re going to remake a film, at least make it one that could use improving. However, while Flatliners wasn’t perfect, but it might be just good enough to not warrant a remake.
