“Oppenheimer” was the big winner at the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, which were held on Sunday at London, England’s Royal Festival Hall. Leading the nominees with 13 nominations this year, the Christopher Nolan-helmed film won seven prizes, including best film, director, and lead actor.
In his acceptance speech after winning his first-ever BAFTA, director Christopher Nolan thanked Universal Studios “for letting us take on something dark, and seeing the potential for that.”
The other notable winner of the evening was “Poor Things,” which took up five awards total, including the lead actress prize given to Emma Stone.
Perhaps the most notable moment of the night was a surprise appearance by Michael J. Fox, who presented the Best Film award. The five-time Emmy Award-winning actor, who also has four Golden Globes, a Grammy and two Screen Actors Guild Awards, came onto the stage in a wheelchair, but was able to make the final few steps to the podium.
