Affleck to Write/Direct Batman Solo Film

Deadline is reporting that Ben Affleck will be directing a Batman stand alone film. The actor/director will also be co-writing the film with DC’s Geoff Johns. Putting Affleck in the writing/directing chair could be a good move on Warner Bros. part. Affleck brought home an Oscar for his co-writing duties on Good Will Hunting, and has won numerous awards for his directing, including a BAFTA, a Director’s Guild Award and a Golden Globe, not to mention his producing Oscar for Argo, which he also directed.

Johns is no slouch himself. He is currently DC Comics’ chief creative officer, and has written for a variety of DC comics, including Green Lantern, Aquaman, Batman, Justice League, The Flash and Superman. His superhero writing credits extend to television as well, having written for Smallville, Arrow, The Flash, and CBS’s upcoming Supergirl.

The fact that Affleck is willing to take on such a responsibility role in the film franchise could bode well for the direction that the DC Cinematic Universe is talking. It’s doubtful he would want to step into a writing or directing role if he felt that Batman v Superman, or anything else that Warner Bros. has planned, will be a dud. At the same time, it’s possible that Affleck is already looking to redeem Batman v Superman. If that’s the case, we can expect Affleck helmed sequels to Gili, Daredevil, and Reindeer Games in the near future.
