‘Zorro’ Getting Post-Apocalyptic Reboot

The reboots keep on coming from Hollywood & the latest to make headlines is the Zorro franchise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, producer and Sobini CEO Mark Amin say Zorro Reborn will be an apocalyptic take on the hero set in the near future. Seems like the success of Mad Max: Fury Road might have had an impact on the movies setting. Even though there has been no director chosen to helm the project, the studio claims principal photography will begin in March of 2016.

Zorro was originally created by pulp writer Johnston McCulley in 1919.  Since then, the character has been featured in a large variety of films, book, television shows, radio serials,  games, and stage plays. Most recently we saw the character in 1998’s The Mask of Zorro, and 2005’s The Legend of Zorro, both starring Antonio Banderas as the masked vigilante. None of the incarnations have really strayed from the source material, portraying Zorro as a black-masked outlaw who defends common folk from corrupt officials and other various villains in early 19th century Spanish California. While we certainly don’t need another Zorro film, a post-apocalyptic take on the character could be interesting. Although, you could say that about any film, really.
