In an interview with CinemaBlend, producer Simon Kinberg confirmed the time frame in which the third and final Wolverine movie will take place:
“The Wolverine movie takes place in the future.”
That’s not a lot to go on, but it definitely backs up the Old Man Logan rumors. At last year’s San Diego comic con, star Hugh Jackman had this to say about his Wolverine swan song:
“I’ve got three words for you guys: Old Man Logan.”
At the time, it seemed that may have been in jest, although it’s starting to appear t be a real possibility. Old Man Logan was an eight part mini-series that took place in a future in which the super villains have taken over the world, and all but a few heroes (including Logan/Wolverine) have survived. Actually making a movie based on that story would mean Fox would essentially be killing off the future X-Men, so that might be a bit problematic. Also problematic is the fact that Wolverine is accompanied by Hawkeye in the story, who is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not Fox’s. But as they have done in the past films, tweaks would likely be made to make the story, or a version of the story, work.
