Universal has released the full trailer for the highly anticipated The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Chris Pratt voices everyone’s favorite plumber, with Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Mario’s brother Luigi, Jack Black as the evil Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.
The film is a coproduction between Nintendo and Illumination Studios. The movie will be produced by Chris Meledandri, the founder of Illumination, and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo. Teen Titans Go! and Teen Titans Go! To the Movies will be in charge of directing the movie. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic worked on a script by Matthew Fogel, who also wrote the screenplays for Minions: The Rise of Gru and The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part.
The story, which was directed by Masami Hata and produced by Masakatsu Suzuki and Tsunemasa Hatano, centered on Mario and Luigi, who set out on a mission to rescue Princess Toadstool from King Koopa after she escapes from her computer game. Luigi wears a yellow shirt instead of his usual green one. It is noteworthy for being the first video game-based film, coming seven years before the live-action Super Mario Bros. movie.
Bob Hoskins played Mario and John Leguizamo played Luigi in the critically panned 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. movie. A few animated Mario programs were produced, including The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! (1989–1990), The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 (1990), and Super Mario World (1992).
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is scheduled for release on April 7, 2023.
