Disney is at it again, this time, remaking the top grossing movie of 1992, Sister Act, starring Whoopi Goldberg, Harvey Keitel & Maggie Smith. The writers behind Legally Blonde & The House Bunny, Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah, have been hired by Disney to work on a script and it is unclear at this point whether or not any of the original movies’ stars will be involved with the remake.
Sister Act premiered in 1992 and was a surprise smash hit, bringing in $192 million in the US & $231 million worldwide. Its success immediately spawned a sequel in 1993, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, which brought in a mere $53 million worldwide, which put an end to its’ franchise quest, almost as quick as it was remade. A Musical based on the original was spawned in 2006 with mixed reviews, yet it gave way to various productions of the play on Broadway & in London, both of which garnered nominations, but no awards.
Its seems unlikely that a remake of the original will in any way achieve the level of admiration & success of the 1992 hit, yet, we’ll leave it to Disney to prove us wrong.
