Universal’s reboot of “The Mummy franchise has gotten a release date of June 9, 2017. The film, written by Jon Spaihts and directed by Alex Kurtzman, will star Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Star Trek Beyond) in the titular role. Though little is known about the film, we do know it will be set in present day, rather than the previous series starring Brendan Fraser. We also know that Cruise will not be acting as a producer, but will be very involved in the development.
This will be one of a handful of classic Universal monster remakes, all accumulating in an Avengers style cross over film. We haven’t seen a good old fashioned Universal monster -type movie in quite some time (2004’s Van Helsing and 2010’s Wolfman both tried but failed remarkably), so if done well, these could be a lot of fun. You can watch the original 1932 version starring Boris Karloff here.
