Keanu Reeves recently appeared on The Graham Norton Show to promote John Wick: Chapter 2, where he was asked about the long rumored Bill & Ted 3. He confirmed that they have a script, and they are in the process of trying to get it made. Here is what he had to say about the plot:
“It would be Bill and Ted in their 50s. I mean, that just makes me laugh right there…Basically, they’re supposed to write a song to save the world and they haven’t done that,” Reeves continued, laughing. “So the pressure of having to save the world, you know their marriages are falling apart, their kids are kind of mad at them, but then someone comes from the future and tells them if they don’t write the song, it’s not just the world now, it’s the universe. So they have to save the universe because time is breaking apart.”
In an interview with the UK’s Metro, Reeves shared a bit more details about the hold up:
“Bill & Ted 3 is right now stuck in showbusiness land so creatively we’re good to go but in the business sense, the rights and all of the complications and contracts that need to be made are not.”
The time travel comedy adventure Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure was a cultural phenomenon when it came out 1989, and was followed up by Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures, a Hanna Barbara produced animated series (featuring the voices of stars Reeves, Alex Winter, the late George Carlin, and Bernie Casey), airing saturday mornings on CBS. The very under appreciated feature follow up, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey (which involved next to no time travel, but rather had the duo traveling to hell and heaven), was released in 1991. After the release of the sequel, a short run Eisner Award winning comic book series was also released in 1991. The animated series then moved to Fox Kids (and production companies, from Hanna Barbara to DIC) when Fox was developing the very short lived live action television series. The TV series featured Evan Richards as Bill S. Preston Esq, Christopher Kennedy as Ted “Theodore” Logan, and the late Rick Overton as Rufus (it’s sad that neither actors that portrayed Rufus are with us any longer). Richards, Kennedy and Overton took over the voice roles for the animated series, which only ran for one more season.
A third film in the franchise has been rumored for a number of years now (as we have reported), and fans have been clamoring for it. Hopefully strange things will once again, be afoot at the Circle K.
