J.K. Simmons Cast as Commissioner Gordon

Gotham City just got a new police commissioner. According to The Hollywood Reporter,  Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons has been cast as Police Commissioner James Gordon in the upcoming Justice League film. This will likely dispel any rumors about Simmons reprising his role as J.Jonah Jameson in the Spider-Man reboot, as it’s likely he will play a part in both franchises.

Commissioner Gordon has been portrayed on the big screen by three different actors to date. We first saw him in the 1949 film serials portrayed by Lyle Talbot, followed by Pat Hingle in both Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher’s Batman films. Most recently, and most significantly, he was portrayed by Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. Oldman’s portrayal is easily the best translation of the character, second only to maybe Batman: The Animated Series (to be fair, though, that show is probably the best translation of the book period). Oldman showed that the character can be complicated, contrary to previous incarnations., and Simmons definitely can bring that to the role as well.

Justice League Part One, which will be directed by Zack Snyder, will feature Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), the Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher), is scheduled for a released on Nov. 17, 2017.
