J.J. Abrams’ “God Particle” to be Set in “Cloverfield” Universe

The upcoming J.J. Abrams produced God Particle will be set in the Cloverfield cinematic universe, according to The Wrap. The film, about a team of astronauts aboard a space station who find themselves alone after a scientific experiment causes Earth to disappear, and then must determine if a discovered space shuttle is friend or foe, would be the third in a planned series of films sharing the same universe as the 2008 found footage monster film, as well as the thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane, released earlier this year. Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane have only the loosest of connections, so while God Particle might be another “spiritual sequel,” it’s possible the audio that was released from Howard’s radio in 10 Cloverfield Lane (below) was referencing the events in God Particle.

As 10 Cloverfield Lane was originally based on a script called The Cellar, it sounds as Abrams and his Bad Robot company are shoehorning some of these stories to make them fit together. As both previous films were relatively successful in terms of quality and box office (particularly 10 Cloverfield Lane, thanks partly to the always great John Goodman), there is a good chance God Particle has at least a fighting chance of being decent.

God Particle, which was written by Oren Uziel, stars David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ziyi Zhang, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Brühl and Chris O’Dowd, is scheduled for released February 24, 2017.
