In an interview with Empire, director Gil Kenan stated that the upcoming “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” takes inspiration from the classic ’80s animated series, “The Real Ghostbusters,” noting its’ “wild, original and weird-as-fuck villains. We wanted to bring that show’s looseness and fearlessness to this movie,” Kenan stated. “I think it’s going to surprise people just how big this film is.”
“The Real Ghostbusters” aired from 1986 to 1991 and is based on the original “Ghostbusters” film Developed by DiC Entertainment, the show follows the adventures of the original Ghostbusters—Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler, and Winston Zeddemore—as they battle supernatural entities in New York City. While the series maintained the comedic tone of the film, it delved deeper into the paranormal, introducing a wide array of ghosts, demons, and other supernatural beings for the Ghostbusters to face. The characters were brought to life with distinct personalities, and the show combined humor with elements of horror, making it a unique and entertaining addition to the Ghostbusters franchise.
One notable aspect of “The Real Ghostbusters” is its longevity and cultural impact. The series ran for seven seasons, totaling 140 episodes, and it garnered a dedicated fan base. The show’s success led to the creation of merchandise, comic books, and even a video game. Despite the departure from the film’s visual style, “The Real Ghostbusters” contributed significantly to the enduring popularity of the Ghostbusters brand, leaving a lasting legacy in the realm of animated television and expanding the Ghostbusters universe beyond the big screen.
“Frozen Empire” will also be notable for a big return of the famous Ghostbusters firehouse headquarters. “We wanted that “Royal Tenenbaums” thing of a family living on top of each other… but in the Ghostbusters’ Firehouse,” joked producer (and “Afterlife” director) Jason Reitman. “We see the Firehouse way more than in any previous Ghostbusters film. What’s it like to sleep there, do laundry there? What’s the attic like?”
“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” stars Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Logan Kim, Celeste O’Connor, Carrie Coon and Paul Rudd, alongside Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts and William Atherton reprising their characters from the earlier films, while Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster and Emily Alyn Lind join the cast.
