EW has given us our first look at Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa in the upcoming Mighty Morphin Power Rangers reboot. It’s a far cry from the Rita fans are used to from the TV series. Banks addressed the change to People:
“It’s definitely a modern and edgy re-imagining of the original Rita Repulsa. We wanted to give her a backstory that connects her to the new Rangers.”
The franchise, about a group of ninja-like superheroes who face off against alien foes, has been wildly popular for more than twenty years. For most fans, Banks wasn’t the first person to come to mind when it came to casting the famous villian. But she seems up for the task. She was asked what she was most looking forward to:
“Obviously, first, world domination. I’ve never played a villain before, let alone an alien warrior.”
Power Rangers hits theaters March 24, 2017.
