Warner Bros. has announced that all of the films that the studio has slated for release in 2021 wiil simutaisiuly debut on HBO Max and in movie theaters. The list of films includes The Matrix 4, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune remake, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical adaptation of In the Heights, the Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark, The Suicide Squad, Denzel Washington’s The Little Things, the biographical drama Judas and the Black Messiah, Tom and Jerry, Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat, Those Who Wish Me Dead, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Space Jam: A New Legacy, Reminiscence, James Wan’s Malignant and sports drama King Richard.
With an uncertainty of how COVID-19 will continue to affect movie theaters and their box office, the studio is hedging their bets and banking on an influx of HBO Max subscribers to help try to make up for the millions upon millions already spent on the films. We can assume they will already save a considerable amount on marketing of each of these films. Warner Bros. previously announced that Wonder Woman 1984 would be getting the same duel release on Christmas Day.
With this many big budget films on HBO Max, the streaming service is going to give streaming giants Netflix, Hulu and Amazon a run for their money.
