Rumors of reboots and/or sequels to classic 1980’s movies Gremlins and Goonies have been circulating for some time now. Sean Astin recently confirmed that that they are trying to get a new Goonies off the ground. Director Joe Dante has come out saying he wants nothing to do with a new Gremilns film. Chris Columbus, who wrote both films, told Screen Crush he is staying involved in both projects for a very simple reason:
“The stuff that I’m involved with — the Gremlins and Goonies reboots, for instance — they would do that without me. So, I’m staying involved just so I can be protective and actually protect what people love about those movies so it doesn’t go off track.”
While that’s very noble of him, I imagine a decent chunk of change would head his way if he had a hand in either one, so I’m sure purity of the originals isn’t his only motivation. Either, they’re both dumb ideas.
