At this year’s San Diego Comic Con, comic book publisher announced that they are working with Back to the Future co-creator Bob Gale to publish a Back to the Future comic book. In the official press release, Gale talks about what to expect from the series:
“We’ve subtitled this ‘Untold Tales and Alternate Timelines’ because for years, fans have asked questions about things that happened before the events of the trilogy, in between the events of the trilogy, or in our alternate realities. In this series, we’ll finally answer some of those questions, with our focus squarely on the characters everyone loves.”
The creative team for the first issue include IDW writers John Barber (Transformers) and Erik Burnham (Ghostbusters) and The artists Brent Schoonover (Batman ’66) and Burnham’s long-time collaborator, Dan Schoening (Ghostbusters). The first issue will feature two stories; the first will take place in 1982 and will chronicle the first meeting between Doc and Marty. The second story will tell of Doc’s involvement in the Manahattan project in 1943.
In an interview with Comic book Resources, Gale hints a bit more about the stories we’ll see:
“John came up with a clever framing device which we’ll use throughout the series which involves Doc’s family from the end of “Part III,” and the first story features someone you may not have expected to see. As we progress, we’ll try to use characters from the movies or their relatives whenever it makes sense, as well as include “easter egg” trilogy references. In #2, we’ll pose an answer to the question of how Doc’s house burned down.”
As far as whether or not we’ll see any involvemt from director and co-writer Robert Zemickis, Gale had this to say:
“I haven’t discussed it in any great detail with him yet because I want him to experience the first issue the way everyone else will. As to seeing his name on a cover, I’ll quote the distinguished scientist, Dr. Emmett L. Brown: “You never know what the future may bring!”
2015 is turning into quite a year for Back to the Future fans. Keep your eyes open for an exclusive Back to the Future contest we’ll be running later this summer.
