The first month of the new year has come to a close and thanks to a major new animated release and top box office hold overs the month finished with a solid performance. Kung Fu Panda 3 opened this weekend and easily took the top box office spot with a $41,000,000 take. It did better than expectations and became the top grossing animated film to open in January. The Revenant held strong with a small drop and moved into the number two spot on the list bringing in another $12,400,000. While Star Wars is still drawing a crowd after nearly two months in theaters, bringing in $10,8000,000. Which means that it will break the $900,000,000 mark by weeks end. Moving itself up to the number two spot on the all time international scale as it is already well over a billion in box office receipts around the world. The other two movies that opened this weekend didn’t fair so well. The Finest Hour opened at number 4 with a $10,300,000 take and the new Wayans Brother’s movie, Fifty Shades of Black opened all the way down at number 9 with only a little over $6,000,000.
