Who would have thought that Zoolander 2, a sequel that was relatively anticipated, would have been absolutely annihilated by the underdog of all comic book movies? Deadpool’s numbers are staggering, and it’s breaking records left and right- highest debut for a rated R film, highest debut for a February premiere, highest debut for Ryan Reynolds, highest debut for 20th Century Fox, and highest debut for a first time director. Not to mention, it opened bigger than Man of Steel, Captain America: Winter Soldier, and Guardians of the Galaxy, all of which are PG-13. Fox took a gamble, and it’s paying off in spades. It’s nice to see a studio actually have confidence in a filmmaker’s (and in this case, as actor’s) vision. Opening Valentine’s Day weekend opposite a comic book movie seemed like a great like a fantastic move for the chic comedy How to be Single, and while it got the film third place, Warner Bros. could not have anticipated that EVERYBODY wanted to see Deadpool, men and women alike.
