Tom Hanks Discusses Recording “Toy Story 4” Emotional Ending

In an interview with the UK’s “Breakfast Show,” Hanks revealed that he had a difficult time recording the final scene for the upcoming “Toy Story 4.”

“It was the first time that we were going to be recording the end of the movie, and Toy Story [4] is going to have an impactful ending. The way you record Toy Story, you’re in a room with the team that has created it. When I went in for my last day of recording, I wanted to have my back to them, because usually, you’re facing him so he can look right up and you can talk about it. But I didn’t want to see them and pretend they couldn’t see me.”

Co-star Tim Allen has previously expressed that he had trouble getting through the last scene as well, stating “It is so emotional, it’s so funny, it’s so big the idea of what they’ve come up with,” Allen said. “I’m startled. [Toy Story 3] was, I thought, amazing. This, I couldn’t even get through the last scene.”

“Toy Story 3” featured an incredibly emotional third act, with the toys accepting their inevitable death at one point, ending with their final goodbyes to Andy, so we have no doubt this will carry the same emotional weight. That said, as it stands, the “Toy Story” series ranks as one of the most successful trilogies of all time in quality and box office, so we can’t help but wonder if dipping into the well one last time will taint the franchise.

We’ll find out when “Toy Story 4” opens on June 21, 2019.
