There are currently three separate Knight Rider films being proposed right now, and while some may that it’s three too many, we say let the bidding war begin.
First, and most recent, it’s being rumored that the Weinstein Company is interested in making a humorous 21 Jump Street/Baywatch style film version of the classic 80’s TV series, with John Cena rumored to being eyed to take on David Hasselhoff’s iconic Michael Knight role, with Kevin Hart voicing the super-car KITT.
Next, the Hoff himself has confirmed that he’s been talking with James Gunn (with whom he recently worked on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) about bringing the series to the big screen, though he’s not to keen on the comedy angle:
“I’ve given some ideas to James for Knight Rider and he responded in a big way. If it does go forward, I don’t want it to be spoofed like Baywatch or 21 Jump Street. Those films lose what it’s about and you have to respect the fans.”
Lastly, and by far the most intriguing (though most unlikely), has Hasselhoff returning as Michael Knight in a Logan-like film directed by Robert Rodriguez (you read that right). Here’s what Hasselhoff recently had to say about it:
“I have met Robert Rodriguez. He does Dusk til Dawn and Machete. And I said ‘You need to do Knight Rider.’ Because he was doing a marathon of Knight Riders and he said ‘Can we have a selfie!?’ And I said, ‘No, I don’t want a selfie! I want to do the movie! I want to shoot the TV series! I want to bring it back and make it dark! Michael Knight comes back and he’s pissed.’ … I hope it happens, and if it does, it’ll be kind of like Logan. It will be dark. Hasselhoff as Michael Knight in 2017. Knight Rider. The saga continues.”
While that version sounds more of a waking daydream for the Hoff, it still sounds pretty damn cool. A TV reboot starring Justin Bruening as Mike Knight and Val Kilmer (?!) as the voice of KITT aired back in 2008, but it only ran one season. Last year Hasselhoff was involved in a mysterious project called Knight Rider Heroes, though there has been little to no information about it, outside of the fact that the movie car website theAFICIONAUTO is involved.
