It looks as though that the long-awaited sequel to the hit 1989 film Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, is no longer going into production.
Josh Gad, who was supposed to star in the film, went to Twitter to provide an update, stating, ‘“A lot of [you] ask me what’s going on with [Shrunk],” Gad wrote. “Truth is, we were inches from starting and then COVID hit, inches from starting again & then my schedule exploded with conflicts, inches from starting again & budget got the best of us.”
The proposed movie was just going to be called Shrunk, and has been in development since around 2019, when it was revealed that Gad would co-star with the franchise’s original star Rick Moranis, who had been gone from Hollywood for decades but agreed to return to work for the movie as scientist Wayne Szalinski. Gad was supposed to portray his son’s adult self from the prior movies. Joe Johnston, who helmed the first Honey, I Shrunk the Kids film, was slated to also helm this eagerly anticipated sequel.
The original film was a ht for Disney, spawning two sequels, Honey, I Blew Up the Kid and Honey, I Shrunk Ourselves, as well as a television series starring the late Peter Scolari.
