Universal’s Classic Monster Shared Universe just got another big hitter to legitimate the franchise. Russell Crowe will be starring opposite Tom Cruise in The Mummy, which is the first of the proposed series of films. Deadline has learned that the role will be a Jekyll-like role, leading to speculations that he will star in a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde spin-off.
The Mummy which will also star Sofia Boutella, was written by Jon Spaihts and will be directed by Alex Kurtzman, and currently has a release date of June 9, 2017. The only other film in the series to have any confirmation is The Invisible Man, which will star Johnny Depp. No word on casting for any of the other films (Wolfman, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Dracula, Frankenstein), but it looks as though Universal is pulling no punches with these.
