Ron Howard Discusses Possible “Solo: A Star Wars Story” Sequel

In an appearance on Barstool Sports’ ‘Lights Camera Barstool’ podcast, director Ron Howard stated that he is not ruling out a possible sequel to 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. When asked if a sequel was in the cards, he said that while there are currently o talks, he thinks that it is a possibility:

“No rumblings, though, and this is not a spoiler or anything, but I think there is interest in those characters. I think there’s interest in the gangster world somewhere down the line. But I can assure you there is nothing being developed right now for a movie or Disney Plus. But, one great thing is there has been a lot of affection shown for Solo, and so of course that keeps boding well for them to eventually turn it around.”

Solo: A Star Wars Story was a moderate success, with a 69% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a worldwide box office gross of $392,924,807 on a $275,000,000 budget, but for a Star Wars film, let alone a Disney film, that’s a disappointment. A lot of that was chalked up to ‘Star Wars’ fatigue, a sentiment shared by former Disney CEO Bob Iger. In an interview with the  New York Times, Iger stated “I just think that we might’ve put a little bit too much in the marketplace too fast.” This sentiment was shared by Mark Hamill, who stated in a Forbes interview “I’m not gonna tell them how to run their business, but is there a possibility of ‘Star Wars fatigue’? Yeah, I think there is. I’ve experienced it, to a certain degree. But they never listen to my ideas anyway, so who needs ‘em?”

Solo: A Star Wars Story was an enjoyable, film, though it was ultimately unnecessary, as we didn’t need a beat-by-beat backstory of everything we knew about Han (another Harrison Ford character received the same treatment in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, but that made up only a small fraction of that film and was treated considerably more tongue-in-cheek than it was in Solo),. That said, we’d welcome another romp from Han and Chewie. If a film isn’t on the table, it might make for a pretty solid Disney+ series. Given that star Alden Ehrenreich signed a three-picture deal with Disney, anything is possible.
