Paul Reubens, best known to the world as the child-like Pee-wee Herman, has passed away.
“Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness,” according to a statement posted to his Facebook.
“Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.”
Reubens was born on August 27, 1952, in Peekskill, New York, Reubens’ unique brand of humor and unforgettable character has left a lasting impact on pop culture. He created the character of Pee-wee Herman in the late 1970s, blending elements of childlike innocence, quirky humor, and a distinctive fashion sense. Pee-wee made his debut in a comedy improv group called The Groundlings, where Reubens honed the character’s persona and developed his signature stage show, “The Pee-wee Herman Show.” The show’s success led to a critically acclaimed HBO special and a Broadway production.
In 1985, Reubens brought Pee-wee Herman to the big screen with “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” a whimsical and surreal journey of Pee-wee searching for his stolen bicycle. The film, directed by Tim Burton, was a box office success and gained a cult following. It also showcased Reubens’ comedic talents and his ability to create a character that resonated with both children and adults.
In 1986, CBS premiered “Pee-wee’s Playhouse,” a children’s television show featuring Pee-wee Herman as the host.
