In a recent interview with Collider to promote his new Starz series Blunt Talk, Patrick Stewart confirmed he will be returning as Professor Xavier in Wolverine 3. Here is is response when asked if there were truth to the rumors:
“I think what you say is true. There is a project in development. I understand that Professor Xavier will be making more than an appearance, however, and that intrigues me.”
There have also been rumors that the story will revolve around the classic Wolverine comic book storyline, “Old Man Logan,”, which was sparked by Hugh Jackman’s half jesting comments at San Diego Comic Con this year. When asked what the third Wolverine movie might be about, he stated
“I’ve got three words for you guys: Old Man Logan. Take from that what you will.”
Now, that very well just might have been a reference to his own age, and the amount of time he has been playing a character that doesn’t really age. Although, Stewart did give a bit more credibility to that rumor:
“And the idea of an old Wolverine – I’m really looking forward to Hugh Jackman getting old. You know, damn him. He looks so great! So I’m hoping to see him covered in prosthetics, you know? And then he’ll make me look better if that’s the case.”
A literal adaption of the “Old Man Logan” story would be problematic, as it contains a plethora of Marvel characters that are not owned by Fox, so any adaption would be a loose one. Bringing Stewart into what is said to be Jackman’s last trip as Wolverine is only appropriate. Professor X and Wolverine, and Jackman and Stewart specifically, have been the driving force behind the X-Men films, so it’ll be nice to see them have one last outing together.
