According to The Hollywood Reporter, Christopher Guest regulars Jane Lynch, Parker Posey, John Michael Higgins, Jennifer Coolidge and Bob Balaban are all in final negotiations to star in his upcoming Netflix comedy, Mascots. Bridesmaids costar Chris O’Dowd will also be joining the cast.
Unfortunately, long time players in Guest’s troupe, Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara, are not scheduled to appear, as production will conflict with their Pop Network series Schitt’s Creek. There has also been no word on long time Guest collaborates Harry Shearer or Michael McKean, nor has there been any mention of Fred Willard, who has been the stand out player in almost all of Guest’s films.
While Guest’s last outing, For Your Consideration, didn’t quite have the same bite as it’s predecessors (perhaps because they got away from the mockumentary format), but Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show are two of the funniest films of the last twenty years, and a Mighy Wind is pretty damn funny as well. And while there have been no slackers in the bunch, Levy and O’Hara were a big part of why they were as funny as they were, and will definitely be missed.
