Deadline is reporting that Paramount Pictures is planning a Nicktoons feature film, featuring characters from various popular nineties Nickelodeon cartoons, including Doug, Ren & Stimpy, Rugrats and Ahh! Real Monsters! The film, aptly titled NickToons, will be directed by Napolean Dynamite writer/director Jared Hess, and will be written by Hess and his wife and writing partner Jarusha Hess.
The film will be a live action/animated hybrid, in the vein of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? The nostalgia cycle is twenty years, so the timing of this makes perfect sense. But the demographic for this film is so specific, it could be a gamble. Film adaptations of twenty year old properties have worked in the past, such as Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but those both benefited from a toy line and series that never really went away. But hey, throw Rocko’s Modern Life in the mix, and we’re in.
