It has been announced that Toby Haynes, the director of Star Wars: Andor and Doctor Who, has been chosen to helm a new Star Trek film.
Though no particular story details have been confirmed, the picture will act as a prequel to the 2009 Star Trek movie, taking place decades before the events of the reboot trilogy. The screenplay will also be written by Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, The LEGO Batman Movie). J.J. Abrams Bad Robot Productions will handle the film’s production.
Despite the absence of a movie since Star Trek Beyond in 2016, the brand is still as strong as ever thanks to the positive reviews and high ratings of hit Paramount+ series like Picard and Strange New Worlds. The Brian Robbins-led Paramount recognized a chance to capitalize on that success by developing a number of features in parallel with its streaming division’s various series airing simultaneously.
Additionally, according to Deadline, Star Trek 4, the final chapter in that main series, remains in active development.
