Famed Bollywood star Irrfan Khan has died at the age of 53 after being admitted to the intensive care unit of Mumbai’s Kokilaben hospital on Tuesday with a colon infection. Khan was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour in 2008, though he had made enough of a recovery to shoot “Angrezi Medium,” which would turn out to be his final film. “Angrezi Medium’s” theatrical release in March fell victim to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Khan is best known to American audiences from his roles in “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Life of Pi, ” “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “Jurassic World,” though he appeared in many Bollywood hits such as “Haider,” Piku” and “Hindi Medium.” His breakthrough role was in Asif Kapadia’s BAFTA winning samurai inspired film “The Warrior” in 2002.
Khan is survived by his wife, Sutapa Sikdar, and sons Babil and Ayan.
