Ralph Macchio is about to get his waxin’ on again. It was announced that a Karate Kid series featuring original Karate Kid stars Macchio and William Zabka (Daniel’s rival Johnny) will debut on the subscription streaming service YouTube Red. The ten episode follow up to the 1984 classic will be titled Cobra Kai, and will revolve around a down and out Johnny who, seeking redemption, reopens the infamous Cobra Kai dojo. It reignites his rivalry with a now-successful Daniel, who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita). Josh Heald (Hot Tub Time Machine), Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Harold and Kumar) will write the series, and will executive produce alongside Macchio and Zabka.
Oddly, it’s being reported that the series will be a half hour comedy, and while original film had some comedic elements, it would not be considered a comedy. We shared a video a few month ago (below) that Daniel was actually the bully in Karate Kid, not Johnny. We’re hoping that gets addressed. We’re also hoping for a Hilary Swank cameo.
