It was being reported that WWE star turned actor John Cena and Galavant star Joshua Sasse were frontrunners to play Captain Marvel in DC’s upcoming Shazam film, but according to The Wrap reporter Umberto Gonzalez, the rumors are not true:
“That Hashtag Show Shazam! story is not true [sic]. There are no frontrunners. Joshua Sasse can’t be a frontrunner because he hasn’t even been seen yet!”
Sasse would seem to be a long shot anyway (besides the fact that he looks too much like Henry Cavill), but Cena would have probably be a no brainer. He’s shown that he has at least some acting chops, and pitting Cena’s Captain Marvel against The Rock’s Black Adam would have been a no brainer.
The official synopsis of the film is as follows:
“Based on the DC Comics character Shazam! Billy Batson becomes Captain Marvel, the world’s mightiest mortal, when he says the magic word ‘Shazam!‘ The name is an acronym for six gods and heroes of the ancient world as well as their attributes. The wisdom of Solomon, strength of Hercules, stamina of Atlas, power of Zeus, courage of Achilles and speed of Mercury.”
Though this is not news for anyone familiar with the comic, it is reassuring to know that they aren’t deviating from the source material. Shazam! will be the next DC to go into production for WB.
